Keys to Learning

Cross-Cultural Understanding

Learn English in depth in small groups to become a bridge between the world and the local community.

Comprehensive English Education

To develop individuals who can play active roles in a global society, the School of Global and Community Studies provides opportunities for diverse experiences, including study abroad. First-year students are provided with particular opportunities to study English intensively, with the goal of developing the ability to take regular courses in English at the study abroad destination.
At the School of Global and Community Studies, students learn English in two ways. One is studying English itself as the language of global communication, and the other is through studying in certain specialized courses that are taught in English.
In addition to speaking, listening, reading, and writing instruction, the first-year intensive English program includes TOEFL preparation courses to help students accelerate their English learning to achieve the TOEFL ITP and other target scores required for study abroad. The school offers students the opportunity to study not only English, but also other languages like Chinese, German, or French.
In the second year, students also begin to take certain specialized courses in English, which are offered in a variety of subjects, including culture, education, politics, literature, research methodology, and linguistics. In these courses, students will encounter not only general English, but also technical terms and phrases specific to each field of study. The communication skills learned there will be useful for studying abroad and working internationally.

Recently, “Japanese & English Time” events have been held, providing opportunities for international and Japanese students to interact through games, discussions, and other activities.
