Producing the DVD Connections: Intangible Cultural Assets and Local Communities

Student D, Third Year, Team IContent Creation

February 2019

As a continuation of our work on video production covering local issues, in our third year we did an on-location shoot at a traditional event with roots in the history of my home region.

The Oshissama no Owatari Festival has been held in Ago, Fukui City for many years. In recent times, many young people have left the area, which has made carrying on the festival’s traditions more difficult. However, the local people have tackled the various challenges and conflicts they face head-on, and I suggested covering the festival as a way to tell their story.

To be honest, I hadn’t thought about the festival too deeply before we decided to film there, but this project inspired me to consider the contribution I can make as a young person living in the region. I also got to see people’s passion for the event firsthand, which renewed my appreciation for my hometown and reinvigorated my desire to see its most iconic event carry on for years to come.

We would like to thank everyone in Ago who kindly agreed to take part in the filming for this project.
